Where an urbex video outing turns into a horror film where wit and worry appear.

As part of a course at Vanier College, I took part in producing a short film called The Apartment. The aim was to create a particular atmosphere and draw the viewer into a different world. I opted for an atmosphere of tension and strangeness, using staging, shot selection and sound to create a sense of unease. The production drew on various cinematographic techniques. For example, I experimented with different angles, such as the subjective point of view, surveillance camera-style wide shots and close-ups, to capture emotions and surprise the viewer. The editing followed a slow yet stressful rhythmic logic, supported by an anxiety-inducing soundtrack (Anxiety – Horror by Kevin MacLeod), which heightened the drama and emphasised the intended sense of unease. This project enabled me to develop my writing, storyboarding, filming and editing skills, as well as my understanding of how visual and audio choices influence the perception of a scene. Working on The Apartment was a real opportunity to explore storytelling through images, and it confirmed my interest in creating strong cinematic atmospheres.
